Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum

Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum
Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum

The first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, the Adler Planetarium is home to three full-size theaters and a wealth of antique instruments, including the world's oldest sundial. At Shoot for the Moon, guests can tour the fully-restored Gemini 12 spacecraft as they learn about America's plans throughout history for space exploration.

From agriculture to fate-telling, the Bringing the Heavens to Earth Exhibit charts the stories of how past civilizations have used astronomy in their daily lives, while the From the Night Sky to the Big Bang Exhibit traces 1,000 years of astronomical discovery. Aside from exploring its nine exhibits, visitors also enjoy virtual reality shows in the Definiti Space Theater, watch the night sky at the Sky Theater, or view films at Universe Theater.

Completed in 1977, the Doane Observatory at the planetarium is home to the largest aperture telescope in the region. With a 20-inch-diameter mirror, the observatory can gather 5,000 times more light than the human eye.

Capable of hosting 50 to 1,000 guests, the Alder Planetarium & Astronomy Museum offers space rentals and on-site catering. The planetarium's regular schedule is Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 4:30 PM. The Doane Observatory is open for Far Out Fridays held the first Friday of every month. Holiday and summer hours vary. General admission, which includes the exhibits only, is $6 for children ages 4-17 and $10 for adults. Chicago residents receive discounted admission. Group rates are available.
