From January 15 to March 25 of each year, anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 humpback whales migrate to the Samana Bay Region, located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic. Traveling to the bay from as far away as Greenland, the whales mate and calve in the warm Dominican waters. Locals and tourists alike take advantage of the season to see these majestic animals up close. Iguana Mama offers a three-hour whale watching excursion aboard the Victoria II vessel, guided by internationally-renowned biologist Kim Beddall. The tour ends with a stop at the bay's whale museum, which features a humpback skeleton measuring over 13 meters in length.
Customized group tours are available. Iguana Mama Whale Watching tours are offered Thursday and Saturday, January 15 to March 25, from 5 AM to 7 PM. The tour costs US$100 for children under 12 and US$139 for adults. The tour cost includes breakfast, lunch and snacks, transportation from the Sosua and Cabarete tourist areas, and admission to the whale museum. For more information: 809-571-0908
