Larimar Museum

The Larimar Museum, housed in a remodeled 17th century house in historic Santo Domingo, pays tribute to the mineral jewel known as larimar. Found only in the southwestern region of the Dominican Republic, this rare blue variety of pectolite forms from volcanic material that, having tumbled into the Bahuroco River, is naturally polished as the waters carry it away. Larimar's coloring, which ranges from a white to light blue, light green and dark blue, is the result of cobalt substitution for calcium.

At the Larimar Museum, guests can explore an impressive exhibit to learn more about the creation of larimar, where the stone can be found on the island, and how it is mined. The museum's ground floor houses an expansive store stocked with expertly crafted larimar and amber jewelry.

The Larimar Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Admission is free. For more information: 809-689-6605
