National Civil Rights Museum
One of Memphis' most-visited landmarks, the National Civil Rights Museum is housed inside the former Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. Exhibits in the museum highlight the history of slavery and the Civil War and the contributions of prominent African Americans to the United States as well as the Civil Rights movement itself. Interactive exhibits such as a Montgomery public bus and a Greensboro, North Carolina, lunch counter help bring the history alive. In 2002, a 12,000-square-foot expansion to the museum called Exploring the Legacy opened to delve into what happened after Dr. King's death and to provide information about modern human rights movements.
The National Civil Rights Museum is open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from 1 to 5 PM. From May to August, the museum is open until 6 PM. Admission is $6.50 for children under 17 and $10 for adults. Admission for children under 4 is free. For more information: 901-521-9699
