About the Midwest
Home to more than 65 million people, the Midwest is the geographic center of the United States. Often referred to as the Heartland, the Midwest generally includes 12 states: South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Nebraska. The Midwest makes up of a large portion of the 94,000-square-mile Great Lakes and stretches across three different time zones. Although the Midwest is traditionally thought of as being relatively flat, parts of the region sit at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain Range.
The accent of Midwesterners is sought after by many radio and television broadcasters for its plain and non-descript sound that's understandable by most Americans regardless of their geographic location. Well-known broadcasters such as Walter Cronkite, David Letterman and Casey Kasem all called the Midwest home at one time.
