The first museum established expressly for children, the Brooklyn Children Museum inspired the creation of 300 such museums around the world. It houses nine galleries intended to actively engage children in educational and entertaining experiences. Visitors can go to a bat mitzvah, celebrate Chinese New Year or jump on a parade float at the Together in the City Gallery, or study the rhythm and sounds of music from China, Peru, Jamaica and more at Music Mix.
Its recent expansion project includes the opening of a 6,000-square-foot visiting exhibit gallery, a visitor's center, a café and new natural science and world culture exhibitions. Its renovations, completed in 2008, also made the museum the first green museum in New York. It now uses solar energy, daylight sensors and carbon dioxide sensors, among other sustainable features.
Located next to Brower Park, the Brooklyn Children's Museum offers three spaces for private events of up to 300 people. Hours vary based on season. Admission is $7.50 per person. For more information: 718-735-4400
