Opened in 1896, the New York Aquarium, the longest-running aquarium in the country, now occupies 14 acres near Coney Island. A key part of Coney's attractions, the aquarium boasts over 8,000 animals from 350 different species, including "Kuku" the walrus, who arrived at the aquarium as a baby in 1994, and Duke the sea lion, who performs acrobatics and diving at the aquarium's Aquatheater. Guests can also visit the popular 90,000-gallon shark tank or Alien Stingers, an exhibit showcasing jellies, corals, sea anemones and more.
The aquarium can host private events. Spaces include the Conservation Hall, with access to the outdoor walrus exhibit, for up to 125 guests, and the Sea Cliffs, overlooking the seals, otters, penguins and walruses, for up to 275 people. The New York Aquarium is open Monday through Friday during the summer from 10 AM to 6 PM and weekends from 10 AM to 7 PM; Monday through Friday during the spring and fall from 10 AM to 5 PM and weekends from 10 AM to 5:30 PM; and daily during the winter from 10 AM to 4:30 PM.
