About the Northeast
Home to 55 million people, more than 800 miles of coastline, and three of the country's richest states, the Northeast stretches across nine states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Its landscape is made up of diverse terrain ranging from New England's rocky coast to the lush farmland of the Ohio River Valley. While the Northeast is often remembered for its bitter cold winters, its climate is just as varied as its terrain. Snowfall ranges from barely a dusting on the coast to more than 100 inches in some areas of Upstate New York.
The Northeast, specifically New England, has taken a prominent role in American history, serving as one of the nation's first political, educational and cultural leaders. Four of the eight Ivy League schools can be found in New England, including America's first college Harvard University.
The Northeast is also known for its seafood. Maine lobster is a delicacy across much of the country; Boston's clam chowder is sought after; and New England clams are craved both fried and steamed.
