Jardin du Luxembourg

Jardin du Luxembourg
Jardin du Luxembourg

Inspired by the gardens of Boboli, the formal Jardin du Luxembourg is considered by many to be the most beautiful park in all of Paris. Laid out geometrically, its shady walking paths are interspersed with a diverse collection of stunning statuary and fountains. Among the most famous works in the park are the Fontaine de Medicis and the Fontaine de l'Observatoire, which depicts four women supporting a globe. A small model of New York's Statue of Liberty also calls the park home.

In the past, the park's serene atmosphere made it a popular haunt by writers such as Victor Hugo, George Sand, Balzac and Sartre. Today, the garden remains a popular spot to read, relax and sunbathe. Located at the center of the park, a large shallow pool is a popular spot for children to race rented wooden boats, while a marionette theater, an outdoor café, tennis courts and jogging paths provide other opportunities for activity.

The park is also home to Le Sénat-Palais du Luxembourg, which today serves as the seat of the French senate. The palace was originally built as the private residence of Marie de Medici, who wished to leave the Louvre after the assassination of her husband King Henri IV. Construction on the new palace began in 1612 and was enlarged in 1835.

Jardin du Luxembourg is open between 7:15 AM or 8:15 AM to 2:45 PM or 9:30 PM, depending on season. Fees are required for various attractions. Tours of Le Sénat run Monday, Friday and Saturday during the morning and afternoon. For more information on Le Sénat: +33 14 454 1930
