Alcatraz Cruises
Former home of some of America's most notorious criminals, including Al Capone and Robert Stroud, Alcatraz Island was the site of a virtually escape-proof prison from 1934 to 1963. First opened to the public in 1973, Alcatraz today attracts more than 1.3 million people every year, who come to explore the island and learn about one of the world's most legendary lock-ups. Visitors can take part in the award-winning audio tour told by actual correctional officers and convicts, who tell tales of escape attempts, food riots and solitary confinement.
Additionally, island guests can explore the beautiful gardens and trails, which serve as a stark contrast to the prison backdrop. Much of the island is steep and hilly; the quarter-mile-long walk from the ferry to the prison has a 130-foot-tall elevation change, which is equivalent to climbing a 13-story building. The island offers electric shuttles for those unable to make the climb.
Alcatraz Cruises offers daily cruises from Fisherman's Wharf Pier 33 to the island; those touring Alcatraz should allow at least two to three hours for a full experience. Day cruises and tours are $16 for children ages 5-11 and $26 for adults, while night cruises and tours are $19.50 for children and $33 for adults. Ferry rides and tours for children under 5 are free.
