San Jose's Japantown is only one of three such neighborhoods in the United States, as most other Japanese American neighborhoods disbanded after World War II. Located near downtown San Jose, Japantown is nestled in between Jackson and Taylor streets. The vibrant neighborhood features dozens of specialty restaurants and shops carefully preserved by both shopkeepers and residents alike.
Japantown also hosts the popular Japantown Farmers' Market, featuring bountiful baked goods, fresh vegetables and Japanese gifts. Japantown staples include Nichi Bei Bussan, which has sold beautiful kimonos, futons and sandals since 1902; the San Jose Buddhist Church, built in 1937; and the San Jose Tofu Company, a small family business that specializes in handmade tofu. The farmers' market is open Sunday from 8:30 AM to noon. For more information: 408-298-4303
