Protected by the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west and south, as well as the Diablo Range to the east, San Jose is a semi-arid area with an average annual rainfall of only 14 inches. More than 90 percent of San Jose's rainfall occurs from October to May; it averages less than an inch total from June to September.

The warmest month of the year is July, with an average high of 85°F. Winters in San Jose are temperate, with highs around 55°F during the day and 45°F overnight. Snow is rare; occasional snowfall accumulates to about one inch per year, typically falling in December and January.
