About the Southeast
The Southeast consists of more than 2,500 miles of coastline and, as home to nearly 70 million people, has the largest population of any American region. Often referred to as simply the South, the Southeast is known for its slower-paced lifestyle, conservative attitudes and charming hospitality. It is also known for its "soul food," a rich cuisine made of up tasty comfort foods such as shrimp and grits, fried chicken and cornbread. Favorite Southern beverages include sweet tea, lemonade and Kentucky Bourbon. Several popular forms of music originated in the Southeast such as gospel music, country music, bluegrass and spirituals.
The South has served as the primary residence to 10 of the first U.S. presidents. It is home to many historic and prestigious schools including the University of Virginia, UNC-Chapel Hill, Emory University and Duke University.
