About the Southwest
Nearly 30 million people reside in the Southwest, including 15 percent of the nation's Native American population. As a result, the Southwest has been dramatically influenced by a melting pot of cultures. Spanish colonial settlers, cowboys and Native Americans have introduced the Southwest to the staples of a Southwestern diet, which includes dishes such as beans and rice, fajitas, stuffed chiles, taco salad, burritos and even rattlesnake fillet.
With more than 600 miles of coastline, the Southwest has a population density of less than three people per square mile. However, the region serves as home to some of the largest metropolitan areas in the country such as Phoenix, Los Angeles and Dallas. The Southwest is also home to several of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Las Vegas, Phoenix and El Paso have all seen tremendous growth in recent years.
