Once the political center of the Austrian monarchy and its most powerful players, including Emperor Joseph II and Emperor Franz Joseph, the Vienna Hofburg is a must-visit for anybody looking to learn about Austria's imperial past. Today, it is the official residence of the President of Austria and the location of the Imperial Silver Collection, Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments.
Located in the Imperial Chancellery Wing, the Imperial Silver Collection features about 7,000 items, from table and kitchen linen to centerpieces that measure up to 30 meters in length. At the Sisi Museum, guests can delve into the life of Empress Elisabeth, a mysterious, fascinating figure in Austria's past. Objects on display include one of her summer dresses, famous portraits, her watercolor painting set, and the death mask taken after her assassination.
Finally, the Imperial Apartments at the Hofburg are an up-close look at Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth. These 19 rooms range from studies to residential suites to the Conference Room where dignitaries held meetings. Designed primarily in Rococo style, the rooms are adorned by lavish tapestries, chandeliers made form Bohemian lead crystal, and porcelain tiled stoves.
Private group tours of the Hofburg can be scheduled outside of operating hours. The on-site Café Hofburg can also be rented for private events. It is also home to the popular Hofburg Congress Center.
The Vienna Hofburg is open daily, June to September, from 9 AM to 5:30 PM and daily, July and August, from 9 AM to 6 PM. All-inclusive tickets, permitting entrance to all three attractions, are €13.50 for children ages 6-18 and €22.50 for adults. Individual tickets are also available.
