U.S. Botanic Garden

Found on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Botanic Gardens began as an idea in 1816 to collect plants, both domestic and international varieties, "that might contribute to the welfare of the American people." It was not until 1842, however, when, upon the arrival of plants from around the globe gathered during the Wilkes Expedition, that the botanic garden truly "grew."

Today, the recently-restored Conservatory building houses nearly 4,000 specimens in separate rooms, divided to simulate habitats including Desert, Oasis, Jungle and Garden Primeval. In addition to the Conservatory, two gardens, the National Garden and Bartholdi Park, bring the grounds to life with their extensive collections of flora, from the Atlantic Coastal Plain native plants to the species of the water garden, which also serves a tribute to the U.S. First Ladies.

Complimentary 45-minute tours are offered to both individuals and groups. The Conservatory is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. The National Garden is open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM and Bartholdi Park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Admission is free. Limited parking is available. For more information: 202-225-8333
