Venue Description
Austin Museum of Art – Laguna Gloria is one of the city’s outstanding public treasures. Laguna Gloria features 12 acres of beautiful Central Texas parkland, including a mile of Lake Austin shoreline. Centrally located, off 35th Street and MoPac, Laguna Gloria is home to an Italianate-style villa built in 1916 by Clara Driscoll, best known for saving the Alamo from destruction in 1903. This beloved site is listed on city, state, and national registries of historic places, and is an official project of Save America’s Treasures.
The grounds of the Austin Museum of Art-Laguna Gloria have delighted visitors for many years. Stephen F. Austin once owned the property, which he described as being “on the Colorado at the foot of the mountains.” In 1832, Austin wrote that he intended to build a home for himself here, but this never came to pass. Before Stephen Austin, Native Americans in the region visited the site to partake of the natural spring found just off its westernmost point. Today, the spring lies under water, but remnants of primitive campsites attest to the Native American presence in the area.
As the Museum’s original home, AMOA-Laguna Gloria is a monument to our long-standing commitment to the community—offering a unique experience of history, art, and nature. Visitors can tour the recently restored 1916 Italianate-style villa that was the home of Texas legend Clara Driscoll. Inside they can view intimate art exhibitions and attend informative educational discussions focusing on art and nature. Outside they can stroll the lush 12-acre grounds overlooking Lake Austin and enjoy sculpture and the revitalized historic gardens. This beloved site has been declared a national treasure and is on city, state, and national registries of historic places. It is also home to The Art School, a thriving hub of activity with more than 400 classes taught annually where adults and children are encouraged to express themselves. AMOA-Laguna Gloria provides a tranquil setting for private parties and community gatherings year-round.
