Venue Description
Fort Sam Houston is unique among Army posts. On the one hand, it is a major, active military installation and plays a vital role in the defense of the United States. On the other hand, it contains some of the oldest structures on any of the Army's installations. This blend of the old and new give today's soldiers a share in the history of this post which goes back more than a century and a half.
The history of Fort Sam Houston reveals a proud and long-standing tradition of service to the nation. Many great soldiers have served at this historic post, performing their duties in a tireless, self-sacrificing manner. The painting, “A Tradition of Service,” was painted by two artists at Fort Sam Houston in 1993 as part of a renovation of the Quadrangle and shows a few of the soldiers who have been associated with this post since 1845. The soldiers depicted are symbolic of all the soldiers who have diligently served their country with pride and excellence.
