#025 A Statewide Gathering for Substance Abuse Prevention Coalitions

Moving the Commonwealth to Action: What's Possible in Substance
Abuse Prevention and Who Cares

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Description:
This is a statewide gathering of local substance abuse prevention coalitions from across Massachusetts that are currently funded by the the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s (MDPH) Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) and/or by federal Drug-free Communities (DFC) Support Program.  The gathering is intended to help community coalitions gain new knowledge and skills, share information, network, and learn more about the role of effective public policy and community engagement in substance abuse prevention efforts.

Vincent DeMarco will address the important role of law and public policy in substance abuse prevention and how grass-roots advocacy can be effective in promoting healthier communities. He will highlight policy successes and challenges using examples from his work on increased alcohol taxes, tobacco control, and obesity prevention.

The World Café is a powerful social technology for engaging people in conversations that matter. World Café is designed to generate collective knowledge-sharing, webs of personal relationships, and new possibilities for action. A Café dialogue sets the stage for more traditional forms of action planning at a later point in time, but it is not without action.
