# 168 Evaluation and Treatment of the Cervical and Thoracic Spine: A Maitland Approach

Course Summary:
This course is designed to assist the practicing clinician in the comprehensive and systematic examination, evaluation and treatment of cervical and thoracic dysfunction emphasizing the use of the Maitland system. Manual treatment techniques to include grade V manipulations will be taught along with augmentive self-mobilization exercises and incorporation of effective spinal progressive resistive exercise. The course will use both didactic and hands-on practical lab learning sessions. Discussion of common sense evidence based practice will be incorporated throughout the course. Participants will also be able to integrate evidence based classification system into treatment and progression of treatment. Participants should come dressed to expose the neck and back. (Two hour of course time will be designated for pre-reading materials.)

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Perform a comprehensive subjective and objective examination of cervicothoracic spine
2. Perform a thorough medical history and screening related to the cervicothoracic region
3. Accurately evaluate the examination findings to place patients in An evidence based classification system
4. Apply appropriate manual mobilization/manipulation techniques as Indicated by the evaluation
5. Appropriately make manual treatment decisions based on patient response
6. Integrate therapeutic exercise that augments effective manual Techniques
7. Progress a patient toward effective self-mgt through exercise that is appropriate to their treatment classification
