Course Summary:
Learn evaluation tools and treatment protocols for persons with stroke from the acute to chronic setting. Evidence based information will be provided for clients with impaired balance and gait disorders, function, sensory impairment, weakness, pain and spasticity. Treatment and evaluation of the upper and lower extremity will be presented with a focus on increasing function. Fall risk assessment and prevention specific to stroke will be reviewed. Treatments based on neuroplasticity evidence will be emphasized in addition to ongoing research involving new technologies. For each treatment, amount of therapy (e.g. frequency, intensity and duration) will be reviewed. Translation of research and implementation to real life settings will be emphasized.
Upon completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
• Describe fundamentals to facilitate neuroplasticity and functional recovery after stroke.
• Discuss factors that affect functional recovery after stroke
• Evaluate a person with stroke, using evidence based outcome measures.
• Discuss importance of interdisciplinary team approaches for acute and chronic stroke.
• Describe treatments to facilitate cortical activation and neuroplasticity
• Determine risk for falls and develop an effective fall prevention program for persons with stroke.
• Develop an effective rehabilitation program for a person with stroke from acute to outpatient setting.
