This course is designed for therapists who treat children with hypertonic cerebral palsy and related neuromuscular disorders. The focus of this course is the practice of treatment techniques that lengthen muscle, increase postural stability, and strengthen concentric and eccentric movement control. The instructor will treat children in demonstration, using some of the techniques taught in lab, in a planned sequence toward a functional goal. Since the course emphasizes treatment intervention, participants must be familiar with impairments and postural problems of children with cerebral palsy. (An Intro to NDT is recommended prior to this course.)
1. Define spasticity and hypertonicity
2. Demonstrate 5-10 treatment techniques to address each of the following impairment categories:
a. postural control
b. increasing joint mobility and muscle length
c. strengthening muscles isometrically, concentrically, and eccentrically
3. Perform sequence treatment techniques toward a functional treatment goal for children seen in treatment demonstration
