There are four systems that make up balance, somatosensory, vestibular, vision and muscular posterior lateral hip muscles. The course will be an over view of the all four system with an emphasis on ocular motor. The ocular motor system is the missing link to balance and performance in the active patient. How do we improve hand-eye coordination, such as boxing, tennis, baseball and golf activities. The vestibular system allows our eyes to see with detail objects that are moving or when our head is moving. Spins on a ball, velocity and placement are critical for improving performance and in the prevention of injuries. Neuromuscular training should include, perturbation training and ocular motor training. Implementation of rehabilitation programs individualized according to evaluative findings will be reviewed and discussed.
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:1) List at least 2 ocular motor testing techniques in the assessment of vestibular system as it relates to vision and balance in the active patient. 2). Demonstrate at least 3 neuromuscular training concepts for the physically active person. 3). Identify at least 5 anatomical structures of the ocular motor and/or somatosensory systems in a normal individual. 4). Identify at least 3 posterior lateral hip muscles that are important to test and train in the person with a balance dysfunction. 5). Contrast at least 2 different ocular motor functions during the golf, tennis, and/or baseball swing.
