Course Summary:
Respiratory muscle strength training (RMST), further subdivided into both expiratory (EMST) and inspiratory (IMST) is an innovative therapeutic tool for both the re- and prehabilitation of mechanisms of airway protection (cough and swallow) as well as voicing and improvement of "air hunger" or dyspnea. This course will present detailed instruction on the selection and application of an appropriate RMST device and protocol to a variety of patient populations including those with respiratory or swallow dysfunction as a result of neurodegenerative disease, stroke, spinal cord injury, vocal fold paralysis, and COPD

Objectives

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Participants will be able to formulate a treatment rationale for RMST within a variety of patient populations.
Participants will be able to appropriately select either expiratory or inspiratory modalities for treatment based on patient-specific considerations.
Participants will be able to apply and document functional change in respiratory, swallow, or voicing goals following application of RMST.
