Perceptual deficits affect many people with neurological diagnoses (e.g., stroke; TBI) at some point during their recoveries. While outcomes of these individuals are greatly affected by the presence of these deficits, many of these impairments go undetected due to inadequate or incomplete assessment techniques. Uncertainty often exists regarding the most effective treatments to address these vexing deficits.
Attendees of this seminar will gain an understanding of the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of unilateral neglect and apraxia after neurologic disorders.
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
Define unilateral spatial neglect
Describe the clinical consequences of unilateral spatial neglect
Differentiate unilateral spatial neglect from selected, other, perceptual disorders
Identify the neuroanatomical substrates of unilateral spatial neglect
Describe two screenings for unilateral spatial neglect
Identify and describe 3 interventions to reduce the impact of unilateral spatial neglect
List the components leading to purposeful movement in healthy individuals, and how these components are affected by stroke.
Define apraxia and describe its common characteristics
Differentiate between the various types of apraxia
Identify and describe the implementation of 2 apraxia evaluation and assessment tools
Identify and describe 3 evidence based intervention strategies targeting apraxia
