Informal Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Seminar on Human Rights series
provides an arena for non-confrontational debate on human rights issues
between government officials, academics and civil society organisations
of the 53 ASEM members. As the largest meeting point between the two
regions, it seeks to help deepen relations between civil society actors
and governments in Asia and Europe on human rights issues.
The 16th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights, on the theme “Persons with Disabilities and Human Rights”,
will take place on 8-10 November 2016 in Beijing, China. It
will be hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and the China Disabled Persons' Federation.
The focus of the 16th Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights will be on the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, in 2016, from a human rights-based approach to the topic. The Seminar will begin with an opening plenary on 8 November 2016 with introductory messages and keynote speeches. The second day will be devoted to the four working groups discussions which will focus on:
a) Participation in political and cultural life;
b) Social and economic inclusion;
c) Legal status, justice and remedy;
d) National implementation and international cooperation.
The closing plenary which takes place on the third day of the seminar will feature the reports from the working groups.
The Informal ASEM Seminar on Human Rights series was launched in 1997 at the initiative of the foreign ministries of France and Sweden. It is organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (nominated by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
