Program Overview

The University of Rochester Center for Experiential Learning is pleased to announce the upcoming event, 18th University of Rochester Diabetes Conference: Newer Treatments for Diabetes - Hope or Hype? This  one-day educational conference will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY.
This educational activity will provide primary care physicians, pediatricians, mid-level providers, endocrinologists, nephrologists, dieticians, and other allied health professionals with updates in diabetes research and treatment options.  Topics this year will focus on the many new and exciting treatments for diabetes, including new insulins, novel oral agents, and technological breakthroughs with regard to insulin pumps.  Finally, we will focus on dealing with obesity and depression in diabetes, as well as how to treat elderly patients with diabetes.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1) Identify the new medications being used to treat Type 1 diabetes.
2) Describe the pros and cons of new insulins.
3) Describe the cardiovascular outcomes with SGLT2 inhibitors.
4) Identify depression and mental illness in the diabetes population.
5) Treat depression and mental illness in the diabetes population.
6) Explain recent advances in insulin pump technology.
7) Describe the differences in treating elderly versus young patients with diabetes.
Participants will be encouraged to be active learners through the use of a pre-activity questionnaire related to their knowledge and practice of diabetes care; lunchtime ‘meet the professor’ workshops during which clinical questions will be addressed; and a case-based panel discussion during which the audience will answer questions using the audience response system. We will also include patient testimonials to remind and inspire the audience with regard to why we are interested in treating diabetes. Participants will develop strategies for implementing patient care plans, and will complete a 3-month follow-up survey to assess changes in practice due to their participation in this educational activity.
To cover a portion of expenses and minimize attendee registration fees for this activity, we will be soliciting educational grants from various pharmaceutical and medical device companies.  In addition, companies will have the opportunity to purchase exhibit space.  If you would like further details regarding commercial support of this activity, please call our office at (585) 275-7666.
