Program Description
The Wisconsin Hospital Association along with Wisconsin Health Literacy will be offering a two day, in person, workshop that will offer participants a deeper understanding of health justice and inclusion. Learning objectives include building communication skills to promote safe, efficient, effective, timely, patient centered, and equitable care.

The first day of the workshop will focus on inclusion and health justice awareness-building through short presentations, experiential activities, reflection and dialogue. Learners will: 

  • Develop an awareness of one’s self in the process of socialization and one’s role in breaking down oppressive systems
  • Practice effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Build knowledge and awareness around issues of race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, ability, age, religion, and appearance; and
  • Gain a greater understanding about how to create more inclusive care environments for patients and colleagues. 


Day Two will include an interactive session to train staff how to create plain language and health literate written and oral materials. The session blends hands-on practice around strategies including, word choice, sentence structure, grammar, organization of content, and formatting to enhance patient and family understanding. Learners will review and revise documents from their own work, create easy-to-understand communication for patients. This session will also focus on developing scripts to answer commonly asked questions when collecting demographic data.

Who Should Attend
The intended audience: quality staff, improvement teams, front line staff, education staff, and hospital leaders.

Organizations are encouraged to send up to 3 representatives and will be available on a first come, first served basis with a total of 30 participants.
