PEARS, developed by the American Heart Association (AHA), is for healthcare providers who infrequently see critically ill children or any healthcare provider who might encounter pediatric patients. PEARS is not intended for those who require credentialing in advanced resuscitation skills. PEARS focuses on prevention, specifically the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress. PEARS participants develop skills in recognizing certain pediatric distress signs and symptoms using several unique visual cues and working at learning stations. Because typical PEARS students do not regularly treat critically ill children, the course includes video-based simulation so they can actually see and hear critically ill children. PEARS is a one-day course.
