The National Forum’s Closing Plenary (Friday, April 11th) is also of special interest to parent leaders, advocates and family and community engagement networks, featuring Rev. Dr. William Barber, President of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP:

Because Every Child, Deserves Every Chance Rev. Barber has helped to lead the fight for voter rights, just redistricting, health care reform, labor and worker rights, protection of immigration rights, and reparation for women survivors of Eugenics, release of the Wilmington Ten and educational equality. He continues to lead the charge, and closes out the conference by challenging participants to take action and make the changes needed in their communities.

Jonathan Brice was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education in October 2013. In this role Jonathan provides leadership for six programs areas including: Teacher Quality, School Support and Rural Education, Impact Aid, Indian Education, Migrant Education, Safe and Healthy Students. Previously Jonathan served as School Support Network Officer in Baltimore City Public Schools where he was responsible for providing integrated support for 200 schools/programs by bringing together diverse offices including Human Capital, Teaching and Learing, Special Education, Student Support, Facilities, and Family & Community Engagement in order to assist schools in building internal capacity to increase student achievement.
Dr. Francisco Guajardo is Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Texas Pan American. A former high-school teacher, he is founder of the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development, based in Edcouch-Elsa High School in rural south Texas. Llano Grande has placed over 100 local graduates in Ivy League and other prestigious universities, and has helped local communities boost college-going rates. He is founding member of the Center for Bilingual Studies at U.T. Pan American, a Center intimately engaged in giving shape to the new University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as a bilingual university. He serves on the boards of the Rural School and Community Trust and the Center for Rural Strategies. From 2006-2010, he led successful efforts to build $150 million worth of new schools in rural South Texas, and in 2013 led a campaign to pass a $184 million bond issue to improve the drainage infrastructure in his home county of Hidalgo.
