2016 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon

Since 2004 Build-a-Thon has brought together Habitat AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps alumni, community volunteers, families and other partners for week-long blitz builds. Build-a-Thon events are held in partnership with Habitat affiliates and local communities and help to meet the host community’s needs for affordable housing while celebrating AmeriCorps members’ service and impact.

In 2015 we partnered with New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity.  The AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon helped to “Rebuild America,” with concentration on America Street in the New Orleans East neighborhood in Louisiana. The event celebrated the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps and kicked off the local commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. During the event, AmeriCorps members, alumni and additional event construction volunteers built 10 new homes for 10 families.

HFHI National Service is excited to announce event hosts for the 2016 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon.  The event will be hosted by Habitat for Humanity of Colorado, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County (North Carolina), and Metrolina Charlotte (North Carolina).  The 2016 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon will be held over two weeks in spring, May 22-28 and June 5-11 (the first Sunday and the following Saturday are travel days).

  • May 22-28:  Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, NC has expanded its housing support activities into a new community in Fuquay Varina.
  • May 22-28:  Metrolina Charlotte, NC will bring to a close their celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Women Build.
  • June 5-11:  Habitat for Humanity of Colorado’s event will continue to further the efforts of ReBuild Colorado, still responding to the devastating floods of September 2013.

Habitat for Humanity and AmeriCorps

In 1994, Habitat for Humanity was one of the first organizations to partner with AmeriCorps, inducting 122 members in the inaugural class. This year we celebrate 20 years of impact, having engaged more than 8,525 individuals as AmeriCorps members with Habitat for Humanity, helping to meet the housing needs of nearly 22,500 U.S. families and engaging more than 3.1 million volunteers.
