2016 SHAPE Florida Convention 'Shaping Our Future'


The 2016 SHAPE Florida Convention, November 3-5 is for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Sport Educators, Physical Activity Directors and Leaders and student majors. Over 100 program sessions and TEN Thursday Pre-Convention Workshops.  If you register for the regular convention, there is NOT an additional fee for Pre-Convention Workshops.  If you do not register for the full convention, there is a special Pre-Convention ONLY Registration Fee.

FIRST TIME EVER....Current SHAPE Florida members who bring a FIRST time attendee to the convention will receive a special GIFT!!!!!! 

ALSO.....for those who were 2015-16 (the year just completed) JRFH-HFH Event Coordinators, SHAPE Florida is hosting a Complimentary Celebration Social on Friday  from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm....but you must be registered for the convention and be a current member by the day of the event.  Join us to celebrate an outstanding year of JRFH-HFH success.

Pre-Convention Workshop Details (as of August 6) 

MORNING WORKSHOPS  (9:00 am - Noon) Select ONE ONLY

GaGa Ball - Fast paced game for everyone.   Gaga ball is a fast paced sport played in an octagon pit. Even your lowest level students will have great success. The more players the better! Gaga works on striking, dodging, jumping, running and agility while students are having a blast!  Kids will want to play every day!  Presenters: Jason Alise and Wes Foster 

The MOVES Project - Creating Happy, Healthy, Productive Students.   The MOVES Project is an initiative supporting the development of goal setting and positive thinking skills through the implementation of physical activity in the K-12 school curriculum.  In this session you will learn the five MOVES and receive all the tools necessary to implement them to create a happy, healthy, and productive school. Presenter: Joanna Tremble 

K-12 Standards-based Physical Education and Assessment  So you have your course description, now what? This session will walk attendees through the process of developing a curriculum map, assessments, and lesson plans based on the standards and benchmarks included in their course descriptions. Participants will collaborate and share best practices. This session will include both lecture and activity. Presenter: Nichole Wilder

Understanding Motor Development and Its Effects on Skill Acquisition.  Participants will be able to (1) describe sensory-motor development to include the understanding of primary movement patterns (reflex development) and the theories related to their effect on pre-school and school-aged children; (2) describe the connection between sensory motor learning and motor planning as they relate to the development of early childhood academic progression and success (performance skills/learning; particularly with students that have difficulty with motor planning due to developmental disabilities. 3) demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of pre-k/multi activities "OT favorites" to develop sensory motor learning and the resultant foundational skills, based on each child's level of development. Presenters: Jamie Sheriff and Dorothy Lefford

Bridge to Life - The First Tee Way!  Discover The First Tee Way!  Learn ways to bridge students? learning of key core values and healthy habits from the elementary PE classroom to every area of the school and home life.  Engage students in fun activities that emphasize the practice of specific values-based behaviors embedded in the context of games and activities.  Presenters: Cail Benna and Debbie Maronic

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS   (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) Select ONE ONLY

All Academics Through Movement: Hopscotch Fun II.  Are you looking for different ways to present all academics with endless movements that can be correlated to all levels of pre-K through college? Come & try to 'think out of the box' for simple, adaptive, individual, small or large group activities! Hopscotch fun has it all: math, science, spelling, etc. Presenter: Dee Hershberger

Disc Golf: FUNdamentals and Teaching Strategies. This all encompassing workshop will feature the Educational Disc Golf Experience (EDGE) principle curriculum writers and PDGA World Champion disc golfers, Des and Jay Reading. Instruction will include a complete introduction to the great lifetime activity of disc golf, hands-on technique, activities and best teaching strategies. This workshop is ideal for any instructor currently teaching disc golf or considering adding this exciting new activity to their wellness program. Presenters: Jay Reading and Des Reading

 Making the Most of Marzano in Physical Education.  The word SCALE takes a whole new meaning when you talk about bringing the Marzano Framework into your classroom.  Take the anxiety out of designing scales.  This session will assist participants in unpacking standards and developing clearly defined standards-based learning goals and scales for any grade, any course.  Presenter: Ashley Grimes  

Adaptive Physical Education - Success for ALL Students.  This session will provide attendees with resources and strategies to help physical education teachers provide a safe and supportive environment for all students. Resources and activities will focus on students in a mainstream environment with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. This session will include both lecture and activity. Presenter: Nichole Wilder

Pickleball, if you can play it, you can teach it.  Participants will have a short introduction to the sport of Pickleball. A few drills will be conducted in order to introduce the participants to the paddle, the ball, and the rules.  A short mini game will be demonstrated and then participants will the play the game. Presenters: Lu Ann Kandt, Marc Fox, and Carolyn Pratt
