2017–18 California Science Test (CAST) Academy

The California Science Test (CAST) Academy will provide science teachers, teacher leaders, teacher trainers, and other local educational agency (LEA)-level and state-level curriculum, professional development, and instructional coaches with a deep understanding of the assessment design and expectations of the CAST. In addition, the CAST Academy will provide information and activities designed to support educators in implementing the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS) and three-dimensional learning, and understanding how these new science assessment item types can inform teaching and learning.

Participants will have the opportunity to

  • review the types and roles of assessments in a comprehensive science assessment program;

  • deconstruct a CA NGSS performance expectation (PE), review the role of phenomena, and understand the goals of multidimensional item alignments to a PE;

  • experience the CAST training test items, identifying their demands and expectations, both for students and educators;

  • consider the implications of the CA NGSS and of items like the CAST training test items for teaching and learning.

The CAST Academy will be offered at three in-person locations. Each workshop also will be offered virtually. Check-in, or logon, will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Academy runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m.

In-person attendees will have the opportunity to register for an optional lunch time focus group.

A workshop fee of $100 per in-person attendee or for a virtual team of up to 10 attendees is due at registration and can be paid by credit card. Reimbursement for travel expenses is not available.

For in-person workshop attendees that require special accommodations, please contact Educational Testing Service at
