    The Future of Health Care: Applying the Results of the 2016 Election
    Bill McInturff, partner and co-founder of Public Opinion Strategies, a national political and public affairs survey research firm, will share public opinion data and insights from the 2016 national election. Deans will have the opportunity to consider how voters view teaching hospitals and medical schools and what these opinions might mean for health care moving forward.

    Bridging the Gap Between Competency-Based UME and GME
    Deans will learn about the latest developments in competency-based education and efforts to align core entrustable professional activities with learners’ progression across the continuum. Dr. Robert Alpern, Dean and Ensign Professor at Yale School of Medicine, will speak about his institution’s involvement in the Core EPAs pilot program. Dr. Kimberly Lomis, associate dean for undergraduate medical education at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, will report on the work of the Core EPA learning communities and offer her perspective on the challenges that remain.

    Strategically Deploying Continuing Medical Education for Maximum Value

    Dr. Graham McMahon, president and CEO of the ACCME, will discuss opportunities to align missions and resources related to enhancing the curriculum for quality and patient safety across the continuum.

    Session Objectives
    At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

    1. Appraise their institution’s use of education as a strategic resource to support the organization’s mission;
    2. Identify approaches to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of CME for clinicians and inter-professional teams;
    3. Employ strategies to an educational home that sustains clinicians’ passion for medicine, nurtures their professional development, and supports their well-being;
    4. Employ strategies to integrate CME into faculty development and system improvement for safety and quality goals;
    5. Assess the funding, resource, and staffing needed to facilitate best practices in utilizing education as a strategic resource.

    Perspectives on Biomedical Research Funding
    Two experts in federal research and development will engage deans in conversation about the availability of funding for biomedical research. Kei Koizumi will speak about the current state of biomedical research funding in the U.S. and forecast future opportunities and challenges. Dr. Lorsch will offer his perspective on issues of extramural funding and support for junior investigators, as well as ongoing developments in mechanisms for funding research at the NIH.

    Luncheon Plenary: Perspectives on Overall Talent Management from Outside Academic Medicine
    Loriann Hoffman, Vice President for Talent and Organization Development, leads talent management for MTA New York City Transit – 50,000 employees that interface with and are responsible for the public’s safe transit every day (8 million rides). Ms. Hoffman will share the MTA’s approach to onboarding and aligning staff with the organization’s mission and will engage deans in considering the applicability of lessons learned from outside of academic medicine to the topic of transition to residency.

    Deans will engage in discussion about how to optimize the implementation of MSPE recommendations designed to enrich content, simplify communication of learner achievements, and align with program directors’ needs – all in an effort to improve the residency application process for both medical schools and residency programs, with the needs of the student applicant in mind.

    The second phase of the AAMC’s Optimizing GME initiative is focused on the learning environment and the experience and process of a learner’s transition to residency. This session will explore resources and tools the AAMC is developing to help applicants apply more strategically, medical schools/advisors counsel more strategically, and program directors select more strategically. Dr. Grover will discuss the AAMC Standardized Video Interview, the AAMC’s research on residency selection, the Program Director Survey, Best Practices for Conducting Interviews publication, and additional resources. Dr. Grover will engage deans in discussion about additional information needed to support the learner’s transition and how the shift to competency-based medical education will impact the transition to residency.

    Robert Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center will describe the institution’s implementation of an evidence-based accountability system, NYU Langone’s customized dashboard, and challenges and solutions to achieving an accountability-focused culture. Dr. Grossman will engage deans in discussion about systems other institutions have implemented and how deans can learn from these experiences.
