Keynote: Empowerment Thru Employment
DeVos Place Ballroom A

  • Veronika Scott, Founder and CEO, The Empowerment Plan

The Empowerment Plan is an organization built around a single idea: to design a coat specifically for the homeless. What started out as a college assignment has become more than just a coat that is self-heated, waterproof and transforms into a sleeping bag at night. That idea has grown into a system of empowerment in which homeless women are paid to learn how to produce coats for people living on the streets, giving them an opportunity to earn money, find a place to live and gain back their independence for themselves and their families.

Veronika will share her journey from being on track to becoming a top product designer, to dedicating her life to the empowerment of others through her own non-profit organization. Attendees will hear anecdotes from her time at a homeless shelter in Detroit where she conducted the research for her coat prototype and how her idea for creating a coat for the homeless led her to hiring the homeless. This warm story will have everyone leaving with knowledge about homelessness and what can be done to help this growing population.
