Each year we offer a one-day professional seminar on a high-interest topic in system protection. Mr. Russ Patterson, Owner, Patterson Power Engineers, will lead this informative and practical full-day seminar.
Symmetrical Components is the mathematical language of protection engineers. In this seminar we will learn how to develop symmetrical component models for common power system equipment and analyze the resulting systems with particular attention to how protective relays operate on these quantities. An emphasis will be placed not only on fundamental calculations but also on using our understanding of symmetrical components to draw conclusions about the systems being protected. We will also cover two other important topics that go hand in hand with symmetrical components: phasors and the per-unit system.
Russ has twenty-four years of experience in utility generator and transmission protection and managed the system protection department for TVA until his retirement in 2008 to enter full time consulting. He is a member of the IEEE Power System Relay Committee where he is Secretary as well as past chair of the Line Protection subcommittee and is a member of the Rotating Machinery subcommittee. He is a senior member of IEEE, an active member of CIGRÉ, and a registered professional engineer. He is also an adjunct faculty at the University of Tennessee in the electrical engineering department. Russ owns Patterson Power Engineers, a consulting firm located in Chattanooga, TN and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Suitable for protection engineers from beginners to advanced practitioners.
