Basic Information Sheet

Center for Nonviolent Communicationsm
Presents an
Liguria, Italy   June 29 - July 8, 2017

Discover skills that will help you improve the quality of your relationships, deepen your inner peace and increase your contribution in the world.

Join us to be part of a compassionate community learning together how to speak from the heart;
practice deep, non-judgmental listening; and build self-empowerment from the inside out.

This event is a 9-day residential training designed as an "immersion experience" in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) led by a team of experienced CNVC certified trainers.

The purpose is to offer you the opportunity to live the process of NVC in community over an extended period of time, in order to develop the mindsets and practical tools to help you in three areas:

1. Personal and Professional Relationships

  • Increase connection and closeness with the people you love.
  • Speak in a way that inspires compassion and understanding.
  • Initiate difficult conversations with more ease and confidence.
  • Remain centred and peaceful when receiving difficult messages.
  • Express and receive anger fully, safely and respectfully... yet powerfully.
  • Resolve long-standing conflicts and heal painful relationships.
  • Parent children from the heart and move beyond power struggle into cooperation.
  • Translate criticism, judgments and blame into life-serving messages.

2.  Inner Transformation

  • Shift patterns of thinking that lead to depression, guilt, and shame and perpetuate pain.
  • Transform anger into self-understanding, thereby increasing inner peace.
  • Enliven yourself by expressing and receiving gratitude.
  • Learn to embody unconditional love.

3.  Contribution and Social Change

  • Teach others a way to increase inner peace, liberate themselves and strengthen relationships.
  • Share NVC in ways that transmit and model its power to transform and inspire others.
  • Create educational systems where students love learning and teachers love teaching.
  • Learn to engage in effective, lasting nonviolent social change in the tradition of Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We intend to prioritise these three areas within the IIT curriculum and there is also room for co-creation. There will be opportunities for you to make requests for specific topics that you imagine will support you in applying NVC in these areas of your life.

Language: English with Italian translation.

Trainer Team

Klaus Karstadt

Trainer - Klaus Karstädt has been a freelance trainer since 1988 in adult education, and even before his encounter with Nonviolent Communication in 1996, he led train-the-trainer courses and seminars on communication and conflict management in organizations. Since 2000 he has worked together with Marshall Rosenberg as a certified trainer in more than 10 CNVC International Intensive Trainings and three years as a board member of CNVC. In addition to the spread of Nonviolent Communication in companies, schools, hospitals and other social institutions, his passion is in the area of training trainers and coaches. People like his clarity and his ability to combine structure and heart. www.k-training.de

Petra QuastTrainer - Petra Quast: I met NVC for the first time in 2005 and since then my passion for it has been growing. I am grateful for my long training process of more than 100 days with Vilma Costetti and several certified trainers from the French-speaking network. I have been certified since 2014 and since 2013 I have been holding seminars and conferences across Italy for the Center Esserci Center www.centroesserci.it in various contexts: schools, companies, private persons. I am particularly interested in social change and I believe in the great potential of the NVC for transforming the world at all levels. I am German and have lived for more than 20 years in Italy. I really like working with groups, every time it is a new adventure and a new journey together. I appreciate the wisdom and creativity that comes from deep contact between people when we listen to each other with our hearts.

Trainer - Godfrey Spencer: Communication lies at the heart of Godfrey Spencer's career.  He read linguistics, philosophy, and history at the University of Cambridge and became a senior bilingual interpreter at NATO.

He studied NLP in London, the US and France; he trained with the Institute for Training in Intercultural Management.  IBM Europe retained him for over ten years in a six-strong International Effective Communication team.  Since 1997, he has specialised in Nonviolent Communicationsm.  He was appointed as an expert to APM (Association Progrès et Management).  He has led seminars for the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the European Space Agency. He held a year-long assignment with the European Investment Bank. An ING subsidiary took him on for eighteen months to run a management supervision programme, which was nominated for an ING award.  Since 2006, he has mediated in the 34-year-long civil war in Senegal.

In 2016, he was invited to Brussels by Mind and Life Europe to facilitate two NVC workshops within the framework of the 'Power & Care' event organized for the Dalaï Lama.

He became à Certified Trainer in 2001.  He trains in universities, bar associations, the judiciary, corporations, and governments…  for which he is also called upon to coach and mediate, as well as to teach negotiation skills.  In 2004, he was appointed to the Board of Directors the International Center for Nonviolent Communication. thepositivecommunicationbusiness.com

Trainer - Ruud Baanders: I have been working my whole life in an international environment, for 35 years in a large multinational company (research, training, strategy, business development, leadership development) and for the last 10 years being self-employed sharing NVC and practising Reiki (UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Japan).

An important strand throughout my life has been connecting and developing people.

Meeting Marshall in 2006 kick-started my journey with NVC and I became a certified NVC trainer in 2011.
Another important strand in my life is spirituality, having met various spiritual teachings and teachers. I have been practicing Ch'an (Chinese Zen) for more than 25 years and I am practicing also as a Ch'an teacher. In the last two years my NVC work has focused on bringing these two strands together, Ch'an and NVC, e.g. through my 'NVC and Zen' workshops for the Zen Peacemakers community.

I am Dutch and I have been living in the UK for the last 8 years, being very happily married to Bridget Belgrave. We love to work together, bringing a mix of personal-life and work-life related skills and experiences to our workshops. We have run NVC workshops together in the UK and Japan - in companies, introductory events, Dance Floor workshops, Listening Circles, and an event we co-created called RelationshiFt (for couples).

My creative passion is playing music - meditative, classical and folk - on the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute).
I have a long and strong connection with Italy and I speak Italian well. www.mahakaruna.org.uk

Trainer - Bridget Belgrave: Since 1980 my work has focused on mind-body awareness practices, healing, and spiritual development. Since 1996 Nonviolent Communication (NVC) has been my primary modality for offering this. In my early years in NVC, I was fortunate to be an assistant trainer on two IITs with Marshall Rosenberg and to co-lead trainings with Nada Ignjatovic-Savic. I was deeply inspired by them and their work and decided to dedicate myself to getting NVC known in the UK.

In 1999 I began working with Gina Lawrie, and we co-developed workshop designs and materials suitable for a range of learning/teaching styles, including the NVC Dance Floors: www.NvcDanceFloors.com I have spent much of the last 15 years publishing and teaching about the Dance Floors, and about facilitation and trainer skills, in many languages and countries. It has been a joy to get to know so many NVC trainers and experienced practitioners, also as a trainer at two more IITs in the 2000s.

I have also tremendously enjoyed being part of multi-media projects integrating music, film, theatre and NVC. I currently live in Oxford, UK, with my dear husband Ruud Baanders (also an NVC trainer). We often work together, as described in Ruud's bio on this page - and at this IIT we will share the role of one trainer. Prayer and meditation are very important to me, and I also paint and write. I speak some Italian and look forward to being part of this IIT! www.LifeResources.org.uk

Monastero Santa Croce is a retreat house, open all year round to welcome those who wish to spend a period of rest, prayer or deepening of their spiritual journey.

Located near Pisa, on the border between Liguria and Tuscany, it is surrounded by a beautiful 10-hectare park, with old trees and rich Mediterranean vegetation. It overlooks the mouth of the Magra river, with a view on one side to the open sea and on the other to majestic peaks of the Apuan Alps - this grand landscape being the silent witness of the history of the monastery.

There is an accommodation to welcome both spiritual seekers and tourists, with all the comforts of a hotel, and with special common areas for group activities, whether for spiritual retreats or for hikers and cultural activities, for which a large conference room is also available.

The retreat house offers a rich experience evoking its spiritual history, in the heart of a park that offers the possibility of long walks, with relaxing places to rest, and paths down to the seashore, where you can wander between rocks and small coves.
