Welcome to Cancun, Mexico!

A strikingly beautiful Caribbean destination that boasts a modern infrastructure and all the amenities one could need, Cancun is the place to go for adventure seekers, nightlife enthusiasts, beach lovers and those just looking to relax. Once a remote, tiny fishing village of 12 families, Cancun has been cultivated into the ideal Mexican vacation spot after the Mexican government began a search to pinpoint ideal sites for tourism development in 1967. Cancun's history dates far beyond 1967, however, as it was part of an ancient Mayan civilization and is still today considered the gateway to the Mayan World, or Mundo Maya, which is comprised of the five Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas and the five countries of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Historical evidence indicates the presence of Mayan culture in the Cancun area dating as far back as 1800 BC, and rising in prominence between 200 BC and AD 1000. The ancient civilization is still very much a part of daily Cancun life, as remnants of Mayan structures re scattered throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and frequented by visitors. Mayan sites include El Rey, home to a series of plazas, buildings and platforms, as well as Yamil Luum, home to two small temples likely used as watchtowers and lighthouses, and the highest point in Cancun. The World Heritage Site of Chichen Itza, which has been named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, boasts spectacular stepped pyramids, temples, columned arcades and more.

Beyond its Mayan roots, much of Cancun daily life is centered on the area's natural beauty and recreation activities, as well as its near perfect weather that stays relatively constant throughout the year. Graced by colorful coral reefs perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, Cancun also offers 14 miles of pristine white beaches, crystalline waters and such natural treasures as Nichupte Lagoon, which serves as the home of thousands of plants and animal species.
