2017 NALP PSJD Public Service Mini-Conference

2017 NALP PSJD Public Service Mini-Conference

Public interest career counselors, pro bono program managers, and other public-service career professionals from the law school and employer communities are invited to attend the 2017 NALP Public Service Mini-Conference on Thursday, October 26th at the Washington, D.C. office of Sidley Austin LLP (1501 K Street NW). Additional programming for newcomers will be held on Wednesday, October 25 at the WRIT Conference Center (2000 M Street NW). If public service/pro bono counseling, recruiting, staffing, administration, or retention is part of your professional responsibilities, this conference is for you.

SUMMARY

Participate in this ideal opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from across the country, attend substantive and skills-based programs, and interact with NALP staff members!  The Mini-Conference’s morning programs will include introductions, PSJD Honor Roll announcements, and a plenary program.  Our luncheon will feature an announcement of the PSJD Pro Bono Publico award recipient, a student who has performed exemplary public service during her/his law school career, an update on staff-driven initiatives, and the NALP Public Service Section meeting.  Our afternoon sessions will include two blocks of programming for a total of four breakout sessions.

Our plenary program this year will discuss movement lawyering and the many roles we may be asked to play.

Afternoon programming will include four exciting breakout sessions:

  1. Government Hiring in the “New Normal”: How to assist students seeking positions in the current climate
  2. Advising the Growing Population of International Law Students (JD and LLMs): Postgraduate career opportunities and special issues regarding working in the US
  3. Counseling the Counselors: Professional development, administrative challenges, and problems-solving/ idea sharing regarding common issues
  4. Where is the Money?: Summer Funding and Beyond – helping your students be entrepreneurial in identifying external funding sources, generating internal law school funding, fundraisers, etc.

This year’s Mini-Conference events will once again include the popular “Public Interest Advising 101” session for newcomers.  Public Interest Advising 101 will be hosted at the WRIT Conference Center on the day before the Mini-Conference, Wednesday, October 25th, from 4:00-5:00 pm.  Public Interest Advising 101 is a highly useful introduction for newcomers to the field and for more experienced professionals who have recently added public interest advising to their portfolios.

Following the Public Interest Advising 101 program, all Mini-Conference and 101 attendees are invited to join up for a “Round-Robin Networking Dinner” at 6pm on Wednesday.  This pay-your-own-way event provides an informal opportunity to share a meal with colleagues old and new.  And we’ll pick the restaurants and make the reservations for you!

The Mini-Conference, NALP’s premier public interest event, is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and colleagues during the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair weekend, and offers wonderful programming that will benefit both veteran public interest career professionals and newcomers alike.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

NALP and PSJD thank Sidley Austin LLP for their partnership and generosity in hosting our Mini-Conference events.
