Dear Clerks of North Carolina:

The UNC School of Government,Time Well Spent in cooperation with the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks (NCAMC) and the North Carolina League of Municipalities, is pleased to announce the schedule for its 2017 Summer Municipal Clerks Academies, which will take place August 17-19, 2017, at the Doubletree by Hilton at Atlantic Beach. The theme of this year’s Academies is "Time Well Spent"

Academy I on Thursday, August 17, will feature sessions taught by Laura Hamilton, who is president of her own speaking, training, and consulting business and a recipient of the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation. Her sessions will address many of the challenges posed by cultural and generational differences and difficult coworkers in local government offices. The sessions will provide clerks with tools they can use to prevent these challenges from harming the atmosphere and impairing the productivity of their respective workplaces.

Academy II on Friday, August 18, and Saturday, August 19, will offer sessions on several topics of significance to clerks, including

  • how to read bills and session laws,
  • best practices for dealing with the Federal Emergency Management Agency,
  • state firearms laws and limits on local government authority over firearms,
  • factors to be considered when modernizing document storage methods,
  • legal and practical issues involving the preparation, filing, and storage of closed session minutes, and
  • important 2017 legislation affecting local governments.

As you can see, we will have something for everybody!

The UNC School of Government has been designated by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) as an approved provider of educational programs for clerks. Successful completion of one or both of the Academies can count toward the education requirements necessary to be certified by the IIMC as a Master Municipal Clerk or Certified Municipal Clerk. For participants who have been designated NC Certified Municipal Clerks by the NCAMC, successful completion of one or both of the Academies will provide continuing education credit.

Each participant who successfully completes all sessions on Thursday, August 17, may be eligible for certification points as follows:

  • 3.0 points towards the IIMC’s MMC or CMC certification (1 point for every 2 hours);
  • 6.0 hours of continuing education credit toward recertification as a NC Certified Municipal Clerk.

    Each participant who successfully completes all sessions on Friday, August 18, and Saturday, August 19, may be eligible for certification points as follows:

  • 3.75 points towards the IIMC’s MMC or CMC certification (1 point for every 2 hours);
  • 7.5 hours of continuing education credit toward recertification as a NC Certified Municipal Clerk.

No credit will be awarded for partial attendance at Academy I or Academy II.
