Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We just returned from our planning trip to Havana and I am pleased to share with you a summary of the highlights of the program below.
We encourage you to register now as space is limited. Registration for the meeting will be opened to the entire AUA on December 2, 2016. We would hate to have to tell any NY Section member that the meeting is full and that you will not be able to attend. Remember the only way to attend this meeting is via the NY Section. Travel to Cuba remains prohibited by statute per the US State Department.
We will arrive Havana on Sunday around noon and check into the historic Hotel Nacional. On Sunday afternoon, we will all go on a walking tour of Old Havana. In the evening, we will have our usual welcome reception which will be highlighted by a historic tour of the Hotel National which was built in part by the “Mafia” in 1932. At the welcome reception in addition to the expected cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, we will have rum tasting, cigar rolling and Cuban music.
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings our scientific sessions will be held at the Conference Center. The attendees of the Quadrennial meeting of the Cuban Urologic will be participating in portions of our sessions. Friday, the scientific session will be NYS AUA only.
In the afternoons we will be seeing, experiencing and exploring Havana. On Monday afternoon we have scheduled an Urban Planning Lecture with a Cuban expert followed by an Architectural bus and walking tour. In the evening we will have a joint welcome cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception with the Cuban Urologic at the Conference Center. On Tuesday, we will visit the exquisite Fine Art Museum of Cuba where docents will provide us with an overview of the Museum’s collection. This evening we will enjoy the dinner show at the Cafe Parisan (Cuban Dance and Culture) at the Hotel Nacional.
Our day off on Wednesday will start with a lecture and Q&A on the events leading up to the Castro revolution by author and Ambassador Carlos Alzugaray (Former Ambassador from Cuba to Japan and the EU and protege of Fidel and Raul Castro). After our coffee break, Ambassador Alzugaray will continue with a lecture and Q&A on the revolution and post revolutionary Cuba. The entire group will be having lunch at a famed Havana open pit restaurant. In the afternoon, we are planning a historic car tour including the repair factory. Later, we will visit a Havana street art community entitled Muraleanda where the faculty will provide workshop demonstrations and the students will perform for us. We will also have the opportunity to meet and greet the renowned faculty of artisans. Wednesday will conclude with cocktails and hors d’oeurves.
On Thursday afternoon we will visit Hemingway’s home and then the fishing village of Cojimar which inspired “The Old Man and the Sea”. There are no activities planned for Friday afternoon so you can rest or explore Havana on your own. In the evening, we will have our farewell banquet at Davina Pastora with the dusk cannon shot across the bay from the old fort which signaled the closing of the ancient city gates. Participants will be arriving and photographed in the vintage cars that have come to symbolize Cuba. Before dinner we will have a group photo. The evening will feature Cuban musical entertainment and dancing with a 60’s, 70’s and 80’s band.
On Saturday, we will either depart for home or participate in the post trip to Trinidad de Cuba, a UNESCO world heritage site with original 17th - 19th century architecture.
Ronda and I hope you will join us for this unique experience.
