2017 Spring Issues Summit

Summary

From Vermont to New Mexico, from Oregon to Florida, opioid addiction is ensnaring Americans of all ethnicities, incomes, and ages. Nearly 30,000 Americans died last year from opioid addiction; the total is expected to rise this year. Many people feel that opioid addiction is the broadest threat to well-being and prosperity America has ever faced.

But in the states, answers are emerging. The medical world has developed treatments that meet increasing success. Law enforcement officials are refining their response. Changes have occurred in health insurance to enable better treatment. The criminal justice system is modifying its own approach to the addicted.

In early April, we are inviting all state legislative leaders to New York City to hear the latest insights from experts in these fields, and to talk with each other about measures that are helping, and those that are not. We will have the chance to question experts, and then to compare notes with each other about developments in the states.

As always, it will be in the states that effective actions are first discovered and broadly implemented. It will be state legislative leaders who figure out what actions deserve to be, or need to be, replicated. The knowledge and creativity of state legislative leaders will determine, most likely, whether and when our country corrals this epidemic.
