About JSS

Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is a solar car competition sponsored by the US Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) that challenges students to design, build, and race solar electric vehicles using hands-on engineering skills and principles of science and math. JSS is designed to support the instruction of STEM in categories such as alternative fuels, engineering design, and aerodynamics. Students who are part of a registered Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter or who compete at an approved Army host site are eligible to compete in JSS. Teams must follow the official TSA middle school competition rules when competing in JSS.

JSS Jumpstart provides elementary level 5th and 6th grade students a fun, hands-on opportunity to learn more about solar and renewable energy by building solar powered cars. There is no fee to participate in JSS Jumpstart, however, participants will need to purchase their own supplies. JSS Jumpstart participants will not be members of TSA, will not be counted as TSA members, will not have TSA at their school, will not belong to a TSA chapter, will not belong the a TSA state delegation, and/or will not pay TSA or any dues. JSS Jumpstart will be an on-site elementary school based event. JSS Jumpstart may not compete at TSA state conferences. However, teams may participate at the National TSA conference at their own expense. The participation will be at the middle school level, limited to one team per elementary school, which the elementary school selects. Teachers participating in JSS Jumpstart will be required to register on the AEOP JSS Cvent registration site (no fee). Resources (the JSS competitive event guidelines/general rules) will be accessible once teachers have registered. They must adhere to all related rules and guidelines.

History

The competition has been managed by the AEOP for more than 10 years, and has been administered by TSA since 2011. JSS is now an official middle school level TSA competitive event.
