Basic Information Sheet (BIS)

In co-operation with the House of Partners (HeTuYouDao) in Chengdu & Shanghai Jingyi Cultural Communication

Seats are limited to 60, to contribute to connection with oneself and others. Apply early if you feel called!

Program: This International Intensive Training (IIT) is a 9-day, Nonviolent Communication “immersion experience.” It is a residential workshop led by a team of experienced CNVC certified trainers. The purpose of this IIT training is to offer people the opportunity to live the process of Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication in an international community over an extended period of time, in order to develop Nonviolent Communication knowledge, skills and consciousness.

You’re requested to have at least foundational experience in NVC. (Please contact local organizers to join NVC foundational programs beforehand)

Seminar Language: English, with Mandarin translation.


Karl SteyaertTrainer: Karl Steyaert (USA & Belgium)
Karl is a community catalyst, passionate about co-creating learning experiences and communities that contribute to peace, justice, and sustainability. With over 20 years of experience facilitating groups, Karl has helped transform conflict and catalyze learning in settings ranging from corporate boardrooms and university classrooms, to ecovillages and community gardens. Karl is a Certified Trainer and Assessor with the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC), and leads trainings in conflict resolution and communication across North America, Europe, and Asia. He learned of Restorative Circles from Dominic Barter beginning in 2007, and has studied NVC Mediation with Ike Lasater and John Kinyon. Karl’s academic training includes Cultural Anthropology (B.A. Dartmouth College; M.A. University of Michigan) and Environmental Policy (M.S. University of Michigan). In addition, he practices and shares ecovillage design, Permaculture, aikido, meditation, and yoga. Karl's website is www.findflow.org

Lucy LeuTrainer: Lucy Leu (Canada)

Lucy first encountered NVC in 1995, after which she joined the CNVC Board, founded the Puget Sound Network for Compassionate Communication (PSNCC/NWCC), and co-founded Freedom Project. She edited Marshall Rosenberg’s book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life and wrote Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook. Lucy values seeing new generations of practitioners supported in their intention to effectively share NVC skills and consciousness. She has actively mentored Freedom Project trainers, helped create the CNVC certification packet, and served as certification assessor in the U.S. Lucy grew up on Taiwan, lived in various parts of the world, and recently moved from Washington state to Vancouver, B.C Canada.


John KinyonTrainer: John Kinyon (USA)

John provides communication training, coaching, and facilitation to the public and organizations. He is co-creator of the Mediate Your Life training program, which is a year-long public training offered in different parts of the U.S. and internationally. The training gives people the ability to connect across conflicting differences and divides, and work together in highly effective ways to reach new possibilities and solutions. John's work is based in the international work of Compassionate Communication (Nonviolent Communication, NVC), developed by Marshall Rosenberg, who John worked closely with for over a decade. John has been a certified trainer of the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) since 2000, and a leader in the world-wide NVC community. John is co-author of the books: From Conflict to Connection: Transforming Difficult Conversations into Peaceful Resolutions, and Choosing Peace: New Ways to Communicate to Reduce Stress, Create Connection, and Resolve Conflict.

Katherine SingerTrainer and onsite assessor: Katherine Singer (South Korea)
Having experienced the Korean War at the age of five, Katherine is deeply committed to bringing about a world that is peaceful, both within and without; by resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner. In 1970, she migrated to the United States and, in 1997, she met Marshall. Later, she became a trainer, served CNVC as a board member, and is now an assessor. Katherine introduced NVC to South Korea in 2003, subsequently founding the Korean Center for NVC in 2006. Now, aided by 4 full-time staff, 12 [yet-to-be-certified] trainers, and many volunteers, she is serving all areas of South Korean society. With John Kinyon, Katherine is currently organizing and supporting a team of NVC mediators, in the hope of contributing to someday peacefully resolving conflicts between North and South Korea.

Venue: 18 Step Island Hotel, Chengdu

The venue is in a retreat hotel in downtown Chengdu. Surrounded by two rivers, the hotel enjoys both quietness and easy access to airport (15 km) and city center (3km). The compound hosts big space of nature, well-facilitated conference rooms, comfortable accommodations of various options, and tasty cuisines.


It is the capital city of Sichuan Province, located in Western China. Chengdu Plain, one of the country’s most ancient places, is known as the “Country of Heaven” with rich soil of cultural and spiritual heritage over last 4000 years. It’s also known for its life style as slow-life and with best cuisine of the country. Today Chengdu is the place where you can have a wonderful combined taste of historical and modern China as well as enjoying both liveliness and nature.

The main airport is Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport just 15 km away

Participants are asked to wait until their registration in the IIT has been confirmed before booking travel reservations.

Fee: Total IIT Fees consists of a tuition fee (payable in US Dollars to CNVC) and accommodation fee (payable in local currency to the venue) - as outlined in the tables below.Special rates avilable for Asia region please contact the organizers

Scholarships: The due date for Scholarship Applications for this IIT is July 1, 2018 (3 months prior to the start of the IIT.)

How to register:

  1. Click here to fill out the online IIT Application Form sent at least a $100 payment is in US Dollars to CNVC.
  2. Applications sent before november 1, 2018 need to include full or partial payment, with a minimum of $100. The balance is due on November 1, 2018. For applications sent on or after November 1, 2018 please include all fees
  3. CNVC and organizer team usually acknowledges your application within 5 business days; please contact the IIT department if you did not receive an acknowledgement within this time.
  4. Once you have been enrolled, the organizer will provide you with details about the accommodation according to your choices. Payment regarding the accommodation will be directly to the venue at the IIT.

    ****Attendance at an IIT is a request of those who wish to become CNVC certified trainers, and it is highly recommended to anyone who wishes to share NVC, whether you want to be certified or not. more info here
