    • 8:45 AM: Policy Keynote: "Producing Prosperity: Advanced Manufacturing and the Innovation Ecosystem" by Willy Shih - Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Management Practice in Business Administration, Harvard Business School
Abstract: We have heard many reasons why manufacturing is important, providing good jobs and capturing the value created by our pioneering innovations are usually at the top of the list. But supporting a country’s innovation system is equally important, because innovation = invention + commercialization. When we lose the ability to make things, we lose out on that early stage iteration between the lab and the production line where a great deal of knowledge and value is created. After two momentous decades of offshoring and globalization, a time during which we lost production know-how and supply chain resources in many key sectors, we need to think strategically about how and where to invest to grow our fundamental manufacturing capabilities in this country. Strengthening translational research capabilities and ensuring that start-ups have access to advanced manufacturing capabilities will be critical to the health of our innovation ecosystem.
