Course Description
The AAMC 2019 Spring Meeting of the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS) will provide medical school faculty and representatives of academic medicine specialty societies with the opportunity to identify critical issues facing members of medical schools and academic societies, allow CFAS leaders to advise their home institutions as well as their AAMC colleagues on those issues as they relate to creation and implementation of the AAMC’s programs, services, and policies, and learn strategies for affecting change at their home institutions and organizations that can strengthen the core missions of academic medicine. Academic societies and medical school representatives, AAMC leadership, and other invited presenters will help inform the interactive discussions, mentoring opportunities, plenaries, leadership training, and concurrent sessions planned for the meeting.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Provide input for future CFAS initiatives and programming
  • Explore critical issues for faculty engaged in medical education, clinical care, and scientific research
  • Understand and articulate diverse perspectives among faculty colleagues in a range of specialties and disciplines

Needs Assessment/Practice Gaps
As the AAMC develops strategies and policy positions important to the multiple missions of academic medicine, input from both senior and junior faculty members is invaluable. Collaborations among these members represent the brain trust in academic medical centers, and access to this constituency can be of great value to the AAMC as it formulates positions and develops initiatives in support of health care delivery, medical education, and biomedical research. CFAS constituent groups help the AAMC directly receive this input.

The AAMC routinely shares insight, fosters innovation, and enables peer-to-peer networking with many constituencies in academic medicine, including deans and other medical school administrators, academic hospital leaders, residents, and academic societies. Regular bidirectional communication with senior faculty members, including department chairs, division leaders, and program and center directors, has been lacking over the years. The plenary and concurrent sessions will also provide CFAS leaders essential knowledge about strengthening their abilities to be advocates for academic medicine, understand important trends and new directions in medical education, learn what some of the biggest institutions are doing to assist medical school faculty in their own well-being, and gain perspectives as emerging leaders within their fields and institutions.

Committee Members of CFAS conducted regular conference calls, annual strategic planning meetings, and developed programming that highlights the leading topics and issues in academic medicine: essence of faculty, education/graduate medical education in transition, academic medicine environment and organization, and communication and research. Presenters will focus on what has worked well and not as well as evidence and promising practices. Attendees will return to their institutions with real solutions to challenges and enhanced capacity to make institutional change.

Accreditation Statement
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Association of American Medical Colleges. The UC San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation Statement
The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 14.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cultural and Linguistic Competency
California Assembly Bill 1195 requires continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include curriculum in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency. It is the intent of the bill, which went into effect on July 1, 2006, to encourage physicians and surgeons, CME providers in the state of California, and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to meet the cultural and linguistic concerns of a diverse patient population through appropriate professional development. The planners, speakers, and authors of this CME activity have been encouraged to address issues relevant in their topic area. Conflict of Interest Disclosure
It is the policy of the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the AAMC to ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor. All persons involved in the selection, development, and presentation of content are required to disclose any real or apparent conflicts of interest. All conflicts of interest will be resolved before the educational activity is delivered to learners through one of the following mechanisms: (1) altering the financial relationship with the commercial interest, (2) altering the individual’s control over CME content about the products or services of the commercial interest, or (3) validating the activity content through independent peer review. Participants will be asked to evaluate whether the speaker’s outside interests reflect a possible bias in the planning or presentation of the activity. This information will be used to plan future activities.
