1:40 – 2:15 Discussion: Aerospace Industry in NC

NC has a robust and growing aerospace industry.  While our state does not have the high-profile manufacturing facilities that capture a lot of public attention (such as Boeing’s new facility in Charleston), the state has thousands of jobs involved in manufacturing and maintenance in the aerospace sector.  From the manufacturing of GE jet engines in Durham and Asheville, to the full scale production of corporate jets at HondaJet.  The aerospace cluster is an especially prominent feature of the current success and future job development in the Triad – and a major focus for PTI Airport.  These are high paying jobs that can provide middle income wages – just the kind of diverse jobs that can help improve economic mobility for our citizens!

What are the opportunities for our cities and regions in NC for this sector – and how do we grow it?  What role can our mayors and our cities play in growing jobs? And what are the lessons we can learn from this sector other “cluster” opportunities that may be a good fit your city and region?
