      • Identify the priorities for leading an academic unit in a time of rapid and substantial change in AHCs
      • Identify some of the leadership qualities most useful and applicable to the setting of rapid and substantial change occurring in AHCs presently
      • Understand the implications and impact of various governance models and health system mergers on the academic missions of the contemporary AHC
      • Understand compensation models that reward contributions to the academic mission in a wRVU-based health system

      Organizational Resilience after Hurricane Katrina and the Storm that Followed

      At the session participants will be able to:

      • List some challenges faced by medical schools after a mass disaster. Reflect on specific issues your institution would confront in a similar situation.
      • Describe important elements of an emergency preparedness plan.
      • List key characteristics of leaders at a time of crisis.
      • Describe the role of organizational culture at a time of change. In particular, recognize that it can be both a driver and a deterrent to adaptability.

      Breakout 1: Finding Top Talent: Proven Search and Hiring Practices for Recruiting the Best Talent
      In this session, participants will learn proven search and recruitment practices. Participants will learn the importance of the “Ten Cs” of a successful search. Appointment of a search committee, deciding whether to engage a search firm, screening candidates, interviewing processes, drafting agreements, onboarding the new hire, and how (and when) to conclude the search will be included.

      Breakout 2: Building Creative Capacity by Managing Your Priorities
      In this session, participants will focus on strategies to manage the complexities of their leadership role while finding time for creative thinking. These strategies have been shown to increase productivity and mitigate burnout. Participants will access their calendars during the session and by the end of the session will have created a plan to build creative capacity.

      Breakout 3: Managing Conflict: Skill Practice
      In this session, participants will engage in a “hot seat” simulation for practicing the conflict dialogue model that is covered during the plenary session. The conflict dialogue model includes four stages: Get Ready, Create Space, Do the Work, Close and Affirm. Based on a real-life scenario involving a workplace conflict, participants will serve either as a hot seat volunteer interacting with a simulated colleague or as a member of an expert panel providing feedback to the hot seat participants. A facilitator will provide coaching around identifying key goals for the dialogue and mutual agreements for sustaining workplace relationships.
