Graduate Medical Education (GME) Leadership Development Certificate Program
Module 1: April 24-26, 2020, The Drake Hotel, Chicago, IL
Module 2: January 14-15, 2021, AAMC Learning Center, Washington, DC
Group on Resident Affairs (GRA) Meeting: April 28-30, 2021, Hilton Columbus Downtown, Columbus, OH

About the Certificate Program

Today’s institutional GME leaders carry a multitude of evolving roles and responsibilities. You are challenged with significant and increasing responsibilities that attend to the educational, fiscal, and administrative health of your institution’s GME enterprise; its compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations; and the support and development of your residency program directors and the well-being of residents.

Based on the AAMC Group on Resident Affairs’ Institutional GME Leadership Competencies, the GME Leadership Development Certificate Program is designed to help you build the essential leadership competencies that are vital to effectively managing, directing and leading your educational offices, staff, faculty, and sponsoring institutions. You will discover strategies and solutions that will allow you to successfully navigate complex challenges, facilitate change initiatives, and apply decision making strategies to influence change within your organization.

How You’ll Benefit
Over the course of the program, you will gain:

  • Access to regional and national networks of other professionals leading GME initiatives
  • Enhanced capabilities in leadership, GME funding and regulatory policies, legal issues in GME, leading effective change initiatives, strategic planning, and more
  • Membership in the AAMC Group on Resident Affairs
  • A strong foundation in policies and protocols of ACGME and other regulatory agencies
  • Recognition as an institutional GME leader engaging stakeholders across the enterprise

Program Format
The GME Leadership Development Certificate Program will be delivered as a one-year, cohort-based certificate program. All applicants must commit to attending two in-person, educational modules in their entirety (Module 1: April 24-26, 2020, The Drake Hotel, Chicago, IL; Module 2: January 14-15, 2021, AAMC Learning Center, Washington, D.C.) and the Group on Resident Affairs (GRA) spring meeting (April 28-30, 2021, Hilton Columbus Downtown, Columbus, OH).

Additionally, participants will identify and implement an Action Learning Project (ALP) to integrate key learnings from the course by applying critical leadership skills and competencies to a change initiative that will develop direct, immediate, and impactful outcomes to enhance graduate medical education at your institution. You will then present your ALP poster at a reception during the 2021 Group on Resident Affairs (GRA) Spring Meeting, attend a graduation ceremony, and network with colleagues from across GME.
