    Titanium the Ultimate Choice
    Meeting Room Residence 2
Titanium the Ultimate Choice: (3-hour lecture with discussion) This is a condensed version of the comprehensive Fundamentals of Titanium workshop which will provide attendees with working knowledge and common terminology of the types, uses, and properties of common titanium alloys. Attendees will leave with an understanding of basic titanium metallurgy fundamentals. Titanium the Ultimate Choice will prepare you to present and work effectively with job related functions that involve titanium. Especially recommended for those new to the industry or for sales representatives interested in gaining familiarity with titanium with a quick grounding in its metallurgy, characteristics, properties and uses.
    14:00  -  17:00
Metallography of Titanium and Its Alloys
    Meeting Room Residence 2

METALLOGRAPHY, a complex process with many variables that involve compromises between time, resources, and the end product or purpose of the investigation. The proper interpretation of microstructures of any alloy system requires some understanding of the phase relationships and constitution of the system being studied.

Metallography, an important division of physical metallurgy, concerns itself with the internal structure and constitution of metals. Titanium and its alloys are more difficult to prepare for metallographic examination than steels. For example, a research lab may benefit from the more time-consuming method of vibratory polishing, while a production quality-control lab may not require specimen preparation with a vibratory polisher. A lab for teaching also may benefit from the training experience of manual polishing, or polishing may be done with semiautomatic polishing machines. With a little forethought and planning, excellent metallographic samples can be produced in a short time for light microscopy of titanium and its alloys.

This presentation will include a discussion of the microstructures of currently important commercial titanium alloys, along with an explanation of terminology commonly used for describing titanium microstructures. Discussion of alloy systems and metallographic procedures will also be included.

This practical, 3-hour lecture would be appropriate for anyone interested in understanding the microstructures of titanium alloys.
